NUTRITION BRIEFS
Q: What dietary steps can I take to reduce inflammation.
A: Several proteins that are produced in the body can be measured. Some are indicators of systemic inflammation -- that is inflammation throughout the body. If elevated, they may indicate a higher risk for such diseases as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and atherosclerosis.
To reduce inflammation take the following steps:
• Reach and maintain a healthy weight (as fat cells enlarge they secrete substances that increase inflammation).
• Increase fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Nutrients in these foods provide antioxidants and phytochemicals that help protect against inflammation.
• Include Omega 3's. Eat fish twice a week or add flaxseed, hempseed or walnut.
• Use monounsaturated oils such as olive and canola.
Nutritionist Robyn Flipse says many of the items have nutritional pluses. Most add calcium, vitamin D, iron or Omega-3. "But few women will know which product is best for them."
The hottest categories:
•Energy bars. There are about a dozen female-focused energy bars, but none has the wallop of Luna. Luna Bar was created in 1999, after women at Clif Bar lobbied for an energy bar with fewer calories. "In a perfect world, we'd see no packaged food," says Nicole Pemerl, Luna brand manager. "But convenience is huge. We offer women something thought out for them."
